One Movement, Many Struggles!

Act Together for Another World on January 26, 2008

Grassroots Global Justice Alliance calls on all members and allies to support the World Social Forum call to action.

The Global Justice Movement will return to the streets in 2008. This coming January, for the first time in its 8-year history, there will be no World Social Forum (WSF). Instead the WSF International Council (IC) is calling on people throughout the world to organize local actions on January 26, 2008 to demand the right to another world.

George W. Bush and his regime have led the latest assault on communities, workers and the environment. This is characterized by what are known as capitalist neo-liberal policies whereby public services are privatized, basic necessities like water are commoditized, and government laws and regulations are stripped away. Billions of people are deprived of basic public needs such as education, healthcare and the right to housing.

For the past 3 decades our communities -- working-class communities, communities of color and indigenous peoples – have been disproportionately affected by the neo-liberal agenda. It affects all aspects of our lives. It intensifies racism, sexism, homophobia and corporate rule, deprives people of human rights, and produces violence, exploitation, poverty, hunger and ecological disaster. We face greater repression in the U.S., while our brothers and sisters in the Global South struggle against re-colonization and attacks on their sovereignty. We insist that the voices of those most affected by capitalist globalization be central to the resistance and defining of alternatives.

Themes
U.S. social movements emerged from the successful first ever United States Social Forum (USSF) in Atlanta, Georgia during June 27 to July 1, 2007 stronger, more united, and with a clearer understanding of the forces we are up against.

Grassroots Global Justice joins the CALL for a ‘Global Day of Action" by the World Social Forum and the Peoples Movement Assembly of the US Social Forum. We urge GGJ member organizations and allies to make a commitment to mobilize on January 26, 2008, and we encourage actions that are focused but not exclusive to the six thematic areas identified for the US Social Forum:

• War, Militarism the Prison Industrial Complex
• Immigrant Rights & Migration
• Workers Rights in a Globalized Economy
• Women and Queer Liberation
• Indigenous Sovereignty, Environmental Justice & Global Well-being
• Gulf Coast Reconstruction and the Right of Return

Your organization does not have to choose one of these themes. You can organize an action on any of the issues your organization is working on. The last time a World Day of Action took place was in February 15, 2003 designated as a Day to protest the War in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is estimated 38 million people took part in the protest on that day.

What others are doing, What you can do
In Atlanta, at the site of the 1st US Social Forum, a Poor People’s Movement Assembly is being organized for January 26, where there will be a series of town hall meetings with people voting on issues that matter to them in the state of Georgia. In Vermont, they are planning a week of actions around the intersection of the war, lack of healthcare and climate justice. Actions are being organized from the Border to New Orleans, making the connections around the Right to Return and against the Wall of Death.

Around the world, people are taking action on all fronts and coordinating multiple sectors. In India, they are having a week of action with a different daily focus from farmers to feminist issues. In Quebec, they are planning an action on global warming, in France they are mobilizing against the war; in Mexico caravans against neo-liberalism will come together in Mexico City. In Peru, feminists are staging debates on Militarization and Gender, in the Philippines actions on housing are being call for and in Brazil a concert is being organized where they expect 100,000 people to attend.

Your activity does not have to be large. The idea is to join with the rest of the world in a day of action.

We believe that Another World is Possible, and that Another US is Necessary. We will act together on January 26, joining our many struggles into one movement, as a step towards making those alternatives real.
